Operating on a non-profit-making basis, BMI is now the largest music rights organization in the U.S. and is still nurturing new talent and new music.

BIEM is the international organisation representing mechanical rights societies. Mechanical rights societies exist in most countries. They license the reproduction of songs (including musical, literary and dramatic works). Their members are composers, authors and publishers and their clients are record companies and other users of recorded music. They also license mechanical aspects of the downloading of music via the Internet. Every time a CD, audio cassette or LP containing protected musical works is made, the producers require a license from the owner of the works and they must pay royalties for each copy they manufacture and sell.

The American Mechanical Rights Agency issues mechanical licenses and synchronization licenses to record companies, the media, and filmmakers on behalf of its musicians. Collects and distributes royalties to their musicians. In competition with other music licensing services like Harry Fox Agency.

Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is the trade organization that supports and promotes the creative and financial vitality of the major music companies. Its members are the music labels that comprise the most vibrant record industry in the world. RIAA® members create, manufacture and/or distribute approximately 85% of all legitimate recorded music produced and sold in the United States.

Performing rights organizations (there are three of us in the U.S.) are businesses designed to represent songwriters and publishers and their right to be compensated for having their music performed in public.

SESAC was founded in 1930 to serve European composers not adequately represented in the United States. Though the company name was once an acronym, today it is simply SESAC and not an abbreviation of anything.

Harry Fox allow people to re-record a previously copyrighted song and they must pay a mechanical license fee to do so. Copyright holders submit their music to make money from license holders. Harry Fox is NOT a performance rights organization. Copyright holders are recommended to use Harry Fox in addition to using ASCAP/BMI/SESAC and Sound Exchange.
